Frequently Asked Questions about Home Ventilation
What exactly is home ventilation?
Fortunately, healthy people don't have to worry about breathing. It happens automatically.
But what if not? What if breathing is partially or completely impaired due to illness or an accident? For this, there is the option of home ventilation, also called non-clinical ventilation. In your familiar surroundings, namely at your home, breathing or ventilation can be safely ensured with the help of a home ventilator and appropriately qualified specialist nursing staff.
What types of ventilation modes are there?
Every person is unique! Therefore, each ventilation method is chosen individually and adapted to the respective needs. A distinction is made between non-invasive ventilation and invasive ventilation, or ventilation with the help of a diaphragm pacemaker – phrenic nerve stimulator (PNS).
Invasive ventilation
This involves an artificial opening into the trachea, called a tracheostomy. With the help of a cannula inserted into the trachea, this provides a direct airway to the lungs, to which a ventilator can then be connected.
Non-invasive ventilation
In this form of ventilation, breathing air is supplied via a mask. This can occur through the nose or via a nasal mask or a mouthpiece. The natural airways are preserved.
Diaphragm pacemaker
With the help of an electrical impulse transmitted via a control unit and electrodes placed on the diaphragm, the diaphragm is stimulated to work, thereby taking over the function of breathing.
All ventilation modes have pros and cons. We would be happy to inform you about them individually!
What burdens do ventilated patients experience?
Any intensive home care, even up to 24 hours a day, is a deep invasion of privacy for the person being cared for as well as for their relatives. We, the Nursing Emergency Team (PNT for short), know this. Wherever possible, PNT's trained nursing staff create space for your private time. However, we are always within earshot to provide individual assistance.
Why home ventilation instead of a nursing home?
It is undisputed that remaining in one's own home is always beneficial for psychological well-being. Illnesses are positively influenced by this. Family life can continue despite the limitations. Participation is possible, whether it's attending events, going on outings, or planning a vacation.
You can also return to your professional activities. We at PNT will support you in this.
What does home ventilation care generally look like?
A rough overview of care activities:
- Ventilation monitoring
- Keeping the airways clear of secretions by suctioning
- Tracheostomy tube care and changes
- Determine and assess all vital signs
- Dispensing of medications according to a doctor's prescription
- Inhalation
- Administration of tube feeding, fortification of food and fluids
- Dressing change
- Bowel Management and Elimination Control
- Basic care, including the implementation of prophylactic measures
- Storage and mobilization to prevent pressure ulcers
- Empathetic understanding, providing reassurance, always having an open ear
And much more.
Many fundamental aspects of nursing practice are based on internationally valid nursing standards. These are stored in the quality manual at PNT and are continuously updated and their implementation is reviewed.
What can you expect from us?
For us, people are at the center. Our daily actions serve the well-being of the client. We will advise you in detail on this in a personal conversation.
Can I even afford home ventilation?
Care costs money. Treatment care costs are covered by health insurance funds. Likewise, if a care level is present, all necessary aids will also be provided. We are happy to check for you whether a personal contribution is to be paid for basic care. We also provide a cost estimate free of charge. Together we will find a solution.
Here is the legal ruling on home healthcare.
The home ventilation department is an integral part of PNT when it comes to the care of intensive care and ventilation patients, whether small or large.
